In the north of the Westelijke Eilanden lies Oude Houthaven, a part of the old Amsterdam port. This place between Pontsteiger and Silodam is a residential area for houseboats nowadays, a peaceful place, undisturbed by the city noise, even though just a row of buildings separates it from a busy street. Oude Houthaven translates to “Old Timber Harbour”, and it was in this area that wood from Scandinavia used to be stored and processed (for the construction of ships and houses).
It’s a quiet place, especially in the evening. As you walk along the water, the only sounds are the breeze rustling through the masts, the occasional creak of a boat, the soft clinking of cutlery from cabins where dinners are quietly underway.
From a distance, the boats may look like they're simply moored in the harbour, but a closer look shows a different story. On the piers, you'll spot everyday traces of life: bicycles leaning casually, potted plants lining the decks, children’s toys scattered near doorways, even a miniature dog pool. It’s not just a harbour; it’s a floating neighbourhood. This is not a tourist landmark, but it’s a great place for a solo walk, with only your thoughts as company.
