One of my favourite places for a walk is Weesperzijde, a street — and also the name of the neighbourhood — that runs along the Amstel River. The most scenic stretch starts at Torontobrug and continues south until Berlagebrug. This is a green and peaceful street, with houseboats on the side of the river and beautiful houses on the other side. Every houseboat has a little garden in front of it, and there’s also a community garden in this area. And just when you think you’ve seen it all, you discover that one of the houseboats has a chicken coop attached!
This area is used as a mini-park, with people going for walks and jogging here, for a picnic or sunbathing in the hot summer days. A rowing association is located here, and it’s cool to watch the long boats going up and down the river. It’s a charming slice of Amsterdam life, peaceful, local, and full of character.
