In the heart of Antwerp’s swanky area – located in the Leopoldstraat and the Huidevetterstraat with its characteristic theatres and shops that offer expensive items way above my financial capacities – you can find a small green oasis.
When you’ve decided to spend some of your hard-earned savings, whether it’s on a shopping spree in posh stores or the most populous shopping area a bit further out, you will feel exhausted after accomplishing your mission.
Nevertheless, you will be able to find a breather in this beautiful botanical garden that has a few hidden treasures. Stroll around and explore the variety of nearly 2000 different plants that you can watch up close. There is also one greenhouse that houses a hodgepodge of cacti, which you can even enjoy if you were not blessed with green thumbs.
I recommend that you sit down on the grass or a bench with the smoothie or coffee that you purchased earlier. I for one love to lay down on the lawn with a few refreshing beverages and an excellent book. This might very well be the most eligible spot in the heart of Antwerp to soak up some sun. You won’t be alone. When you visit this botanical garden loneliness will be untenable.
Have no fear though. Mainly due to the reserved nature of the locals, nobody will bother you while you are skimming through the latest edition of Playboy, 50 shades of gray or the oeuvre of Bukowski or Kafka.
