Mampoko, my favorite place to eat in Antwerp. Nothing fancy, but high quality for a fair price. Warm decor, lively atmosphere and a friendly service. Brown wooden seating with red velvet pillowing and a mixture of tables pull you inside. The room is lightened by the high ceiling and big windows and decorated with old advertising posters and paintings from our colonial time.
Fresh and variation are the keywords here. Pure, unpretentious and fresh above all else. Even mashed potatoes (‘stoemp’) with sausages get something extra in this place. The set menu contains the basics like an apple/bacon salad, steak, Flemish stew with fries (‘stoofvlees’) and my n°1, Thai chicken stew. There is also a chalkboard with the daily suggestions. Those suggestions can go from quiche, to lamb chops with the best honey-mustard sauce ever, to ‘veggie tartiflette’ and so on.
The place wasn’t very well known at first, but it’s getting more popular every day. Going here for lunch or dinner on a weekday should not be a problem, but if you plan to have dinner here on a Saturday, be sure to make a reservation. Also, they have a tiny tiny kitchen, so a slight delay is possible, but the food is definitely worth the wait!
