- Listen, you have to make these available to everyone! — said neighbors and friends when visiting the home of the future owners of Ariana Yummy and trying their homemade, yummy bolani and mouth-watering Kabuli palao.
A couple of months afterwards, the first Afghan eatery in Serbia opened, showcasing the flavours that connect the owners to their heritage.
This lovely spot is nestled in Borča neighborhood, on the side of Danube that is opposite to the city center, where a small community of those who fled Syria, Afghanistan, and other countries resides.
For some of them, safety was found in Serbia, along with friends and opportunities. Life started anew. Ariana is one of the pioneering businesses opened by those who started from scratch in Belgrade, which makes it all the more significant.
It is an eatery with small seating space, and actually many dishes deserve to be enjoyed with proper silverware. My favorites are the sabzi palao, a fragrant blend of cumin-infused rice with lentils and veggies, and banjan burani, a comforting combination of tender eggplant and yogurt.
For those who'd like to eat on the go, a variety of kebabs are available, served with tortilla or rice, that can also be paired with fresh and warm, spicy pakoras, samosas, or Afghan rolls.
The family prepares and shares each dish with love, just like they do with friends at their Belgrade home.
