Exploring Belgrade on a bike? It may be a bit bumpy at times and bike lanes are mostly present on the New Belgrade-Zemun side of the rivers, but hey, it can be both adventurous and rewarding – once caution is applied.
If you decide to do so, you should add one pit stop visit on your ride – to the first vélo café in town, and the country – CikloBar.
Why drop by? Well, first the obvious – you can refresh yourselves with good coffee, an array of smoothies and snacks. Second – you can marvel the brutalist New Belgrade block (Blok 22, to be specific) where it's nested, the lives of its locals, as well as the interior of the cafe, a love letter to Yugoslav-era design. Think minimalist vibes, vintage furniture and a whole lot of concrete charm.
And the third reason is actually – multiple:
Meet awesome like-minded people? Check. Attend a free bike repair workshop? Check. Chat with activists? Check. Rent a tool or take a bike part from the 'exchange box'? Check. Watch a film about bicycle-related topics? Check. Dive into solidary used books bazaars or clothes swaps? Check.
This café and a two-wheeler service station is also filled with bike-inspired books, mags, as well as lovely merch made by local artists. It is a starting point of various joint rides, picnics and whatnot. CikloBar was dreamed up and is operated by two bike-loving, eco-conscious girls.
Bottom line – many reasons to visit! Even if you're not on wheels.
