Footnote Centre for Image and Text is an artist-run community space, which binds together audio-visual and textual practices through a transdisciplinary and trans-academic program. Since 2020, they have been dedicated to connecting international community with the regional art scene, this meaning people coming from various initiatives and fields of work.
The eclectic nature of this centre suggests that Footnote is not open to the public at concrete times or days of the week, but you can always announce yourself via email (available on the website). Mia Ćuk, one of the founders, an artist and a curator, will probably be there to greet you and guide you through the Footnote's mission, residents and library.
If you are an artist, Footnote residencies are a great way to visit Belgrade; you will be able to do your research in the nicely equipped studio, while the character of the place will inspire you to get acquainted with the local artscape. Be sure to follow the Footnote Centre social media to stay updated about the open calls and events/parties/presentations!
It is truly possible to run into non-formal events of all sorts here, from exhibitions to presentations, from conversations to workshops hosting captivating authors. No matter the reason for my visit, I always end up browsing through the artists' books, publications and zines, some of which are rather rare, especially the self-published Yugoslav ones. This is usually followed by sharing a bottle of wine with an artist or a publisher I may never meet again.
