Strolling around Zemun, you are bound to find many unique spots that, more often than not, like to remind you that, while officially part of Belgrade, Zemun prides itself on its distinct history and identity.
This part of the city sits on and around three hills: Gardoš (the most famous one), Ćukovac and finally Kalvarija, on the slopes of which you can find Kalvarice (a play on the words Kalvarija and Stephenie — Serbian for steps). Hidden amongst the surrounding green spaces and private family homes, these steps that connect Lower and Upper Zemun were painted by a group of locals to showcase the names of 128 famous people who grew up in Zemun.
These stairs are one of my favorite places in Zemun because not only do I find out about another famous "Zemunac" every time I climb them, but the park at the top offers a great view over parts of Zemun and New Belgrade. The lookout is also close to my heart as it takes me back to New Year celebrations when we would go watch the fireworks in the distance, enjoying the peace and quiet of the park, mostly frequented by locals.
