If you've ever spent more than a couple of hours in Belgrade, you've probably noticed how crowded and hectic it can get, especially in the city center and close to major tourist attractions. A bustling metropolis that often suffers from its (lack of) infrastructure, you can hardly find a quiet street to walk down without venturing far from the city center.
One of the areas of central Belgrade, which still maintains its peaceful, "suburban" quality is Profesorska kolonija (Serbian for Professors' colony). This area was named after professors of the University of Belgrade, who started building stately homes in this area at the beginning of the 20th century. Uncommon to Belgrade, most of the houses and villas from this time still line the narrow, quiet streets. Due to its peace and quiet and beautiful architecture, not to mention the vicinity to downtown Belgrade, Profesorska kolonija is one of my favorite areas of Belgrade to just wander around in, with no set goal in mind other than to just enjoy my surroundings.
Of course, being in Belgrade, even this (mostly) residential area still has several cafes you can visit after a nice walk. Don't miss Mykonos — a Greek-themed cafe serving one of the only proper Greek Frappes in Belgrade, or if you're craving something sweet, visit Rollna for a delicious hot cinnamon roll.
