Šabački Slatinac is a small restaurant (the special name in Serbia for this type of restaurants is KAFANA) which represents the real Belgrade, with local food, people (guests), prices, drinks, waiters, the interior... It has traditional Serbian specialties such as beef or lamb soup, roast meat, tripe, cold meat aspic. These are standards in the menu. I was surprised when I saw that the official website has English too, but it tells me that someone else besides me sees that Belgrade is not only Kalemegdan, Knez Mihajlova, Skadarlija…
Here is a story from Slatinac, where I spent a few wonderful evenings, in the garden or inside. One local businessman used to come to Slatinac often, with his business partners, as well as privately. One evening, he came with his wife. The waiter approached the table, regarded them warmly and said: "O dear madam, you changed your hairstyle, it is nice." The businessman’s wife looked at him and said, "What do you mean? I’ve had this haircut for years!" And the waiter answered: "But I saw you two days ago, it was a different haircut!" The businessman looked at him furiously, giving him the sign to shut up, but, the damage had been done...
I hope you visit Slatinac. It is not trendy, but you will feel the common everyday atmosphere that Belgrade’s citizens enjoy whenever they feel like it. Maybe you will meet some cheerful group and hear more interesting stories...
