Despite being a longtime vegetarian, I often come up short when asked to recommend a plant-based restaurant in Belgrade. Perhaps I'm snobbish… or maybe I’ve just never been fond of veggie burgers or dishes that mimic meat.
But there are places that transcend clichés, where the food speaks of genuine care, creativity and passion. One such gem is VegANGELov.
Tucked in the heart of the city, it is a small, soulful spot run by a seasoned chef Ivan Angelov, who decided to reinvent his culinary path.
Their menu is a living thing, evolving with the seasons and the availability of (rare) ingredients – think morel mushrooms or something you’ll probably need to Google. It draws inspiration from a global pallete, from Italian and Syrian to Indonesian, Japanese and whatnot.
Their concept? “Forest on a plate.” It’s a celebration of the richness and elegance of plant-based cuisine, dishes that leave you feeling both nourished and light.
While I adore their ramen, nasi goreng and Tom Kha, the mushroom-inspired creations are my favourite, such as mojic with oyster and porcini, or chili con funghi. The risottos, pasta and caponata are almost equally delightful.
Desserts are a poetic finish: you can try their famous carrot cake, matcha with strawberries, or pear on a plate – poached in white wine and turmeric, served on white chocolate cream with hazelnuts.
And don’t miss their homemade kombucha or warm drinks infused with mushrooms like reishi and lion’s mane – earthy, comforting, and just a bit magical.

The daily menu can, for example, include pumpkin with leek and poppy seeds, Thai curry with dried banana, chutney and raita. Or the good old veggie burger.
