Located in the heart of Berlin’s vibrant Prenzlauer Berg district, the Kulturbrauerei is a multi-functional space that blends history, culture, and creativity. Once a historic brewery, the complex has been beautifully restored and now serves as a dynamic cultural hub. The buildings house a variety of artistic initiatives, including music and dance schools, a cinema, a theatre, a poetry club, as well as several bars and spaces for events.
One of the highlights of the Kulturbrauerei is its museum, dedicated to the history of Communist East Germany. Offering a rare and insightful look into life behind the Iron Curtain, the museum’s permanent exhibition, “Everyday Life in the GDR,” is a must-visit for history enthusiasts. The exhibition features over 800 original items, 200+ documents, and a collection of contemporary films and audio recordings that paint a vivid picture of daily life in East Germany.
Entry to the museum is free of charge and it really is a great way to learn more about the not-so-distant past of Berlin and the GDR and what life was like back then.
In addition to the museum, the Kulturbrauerei hosts a variety of events, workshops, and performances, so make sure to check their schedule ahead of your visit.
