As I wandered through the streets, letting my feet guide me as they always do, something unexpected caught my eye—the massive window of a church I pass by every day, glowing brilliantly in the sunlight. I took a closer look and realized I wasn’t mistaken—it was a Tiffany window.
My fascination with Tiffany dates back to my teenage years. There was always something soothing about reading my book under the soft glow of the small Tiffany lamp in our home.
Intrigued, I looked closer and realized all the windows were Tiffany creations. I had to see them up close. A friendly staff member welcomed me and offered a brochure. Arlington Street Church offers inexpensive self-guided tours during the daytime. Guided tours were available, and children under 12 could enter free with a paying adult.
Arlington Street Church has the largest collection of Tiffany stained glass windows with one theme in the world. In 1898, the church commissioned Louis Comfort Tiffany to create a series of 20 stained glass windows with a unified theme. The project continued until 1929, but only 16 windows were completed before the company declared bankruptcy during the Great Depression, leaving four spaces empty. Inside, you’ll also come across these window spaces. Tiffany’s mastery of glasswork is nothing short of extraordinary. The colors, the intricate details, and the innovative techniques make each window a breathtaking work of art.
If you ever find yourself in Boston, make sure to stop by Arlington Street Church. Missing it would be a true regret.
