Ährensache Biobäckerei is a bakery that sells baked goods made from organic and regional ingredients. They also have allergy-free goods (i.e. wheat-free, yeast-free, animal protein-free and gluten-free). My favorite breads from Ährensache are the Überraschungsbrot (surprise bread) and the vegan Dinkel-Kamut-Hefebrot Mohn (i.e. spelt kamut yeast bread with poppy seeds). In addition to bread, they also sell other baked goods, including permanent and seasonal pastries. For example, during the Cologne Carnival (on 11 November and in February/early March), they naturally sell doughnuts.
As well as selling delicious baked goods, they are determined to create humane working conditions for their employees and themselves, which is reflected in their friendly staff. They also offer guided tours for kindergarten groups or school classes.
If the Ährensache organic bakery is too far away, you can also find their products at the online farmers' market Marktschwärmer (i.e. The Food Assembly), which delivers local produce to several locations in Cologne.
