Anytime I pass by the "Café Rotkehlchen" it is crowded. That's because it is a super cosy cafe where you can easily feel at home and relax from a hectic day of shopping on the Venloer Straße, where the cafe is located. The warmth, guest-friendly and cosy, familiar atmosphere is created by the interior, the owner Katja Preising ("Kete") and her absolutely delicious, fresh and all super local products.
In comparison to all those newly opened cafes that claim to have homemade and/or regional products Kete's motivation was never to be hip and stylish but honest, authentic and guest friendly....as if you would go to your best friend's home.
After working a couple of years in other cafes and restaurants she could finally realize her long dream of opening her own cafe in 2012. Her food concept incorporates, as I mentioned, the direct neighborhood of the "veedel" (Colonian word for "area") called "Ehrenfeld". The beans for her coffee come from the roastery Schamong and the cakes are made by her mother according to her grandmother's original recipes. Furthermore she offers vegan dishes for lunch five days a week, waffles on Fridays and several delicious sandwiches which can be eaten for breakfast or lunch.
