Golden Hare was a favourite of mine for years but sadly they moved out of my neck of the woods a few years back :( As much as it was a better location for them, away from the stag-do-tactic Grassmarket, it meant I had a bit of a walk to get there.
The good news is I now work round the corner so can return to regular visits! I say good news but my bank balance might not agree...
Golden Hare have a great selection of fact and fiction, classic and modern books as well as a children's section. It has a bigger collection than their previous shop but still not huge, but that's not the aim here. The books are hand-selected by the staff and they're all beautiful editions that seem wasted hiding on bookshelves.
There is a book group on the first Tuesday of each month that you can sign up for in the store and the shop sometimes runs other events which are advertised on their webpage.
I find it impossible to nip in and out to pick up a book; if I go in I commit a good chunk of time for browsing the shelves, chatting with the staff and talking myself out of not buying every book I pick up. My favourite thing about the new shop though is the large fireplace in the middle room, making it even more inviting to settle in and stay awhile.
