The South side of Glasgow holds a few "off the beaten track" gems and, to me, the Tramway Theatre is definitely one of them. So, I regularly check what the seasonal programme has to offer and love to venture there to see a show.
Located in the Pollockshields area, just a few hundred metres from the popular Queen's Park, the venue is a former Tram depot and factory (built in 1894) which was converted into a Contemporay Arts Center in 1988.
The programme offers (often challenging) visual and art performances made up of theatre, dance, film and music, and world-class exhibitions. Some of my recent highlights include a thought-provoking showcase bringing together film archives and live electronic music and a contemporary dance show exploring the theme of hillwalking in Scotland. I am always surprised by the projects and the way they engage audiences!
Another surprising feature that leads me to the Tramway is the Hidden Garden which evolved from the factory wasteland, just at the rear of the ground floor cafe bar. It is a great place I enjoy to refuel with friends during daytime, even in winter.
The Tram is easily reached by public transport:
- BUSES 3, 38, 57, 57A run every 10 minutes from Union Street in Glasgow's city centre
- TRAIN from Glasgow's Central Station (7 minute journey)
- Bridge Street & Shields Road Subways station (under a mile to walk)
