'Tünel' which literally means 'tunnel' in Turkish, is the second-oldest underground railway in the world after the London Underground. Opened in 1875 in İstanbul, it was a highly significant development at the time, and the station — along with the surrounding buildings that were constructed in rapid succession — had a major impact on the cultural fabric of the city.
The building housing the arcade was built in 1883, right across from the funicular railway from which it takes its name. Over the years, the arcade has hosted many different establishments. Until recently, its oldest resident — a century-old bookstore known for selling very rare manuscripts purchased at auctions as well as contemporary books — gave up its space to another bookstore. Offering books in various languages, the new bookstore is located at one of the arcade’s three entrances.
The rest of the arcade, lined with several restaurants and wine bars, offers visitors the chance to be transported to another century of İstanbul, with its half-open ceiling that reveals the intricacies of the architecture while they enjoy a drink or a meal.
