Local is every person I see or every spot I go to on a daily basis. And I'm a lucky guy at this point; I live in a place where the neighbours know each other, where I can't go out on the street without saying several "Hellos", where the neighbours gather on the street for a "community dinner" of cheese, bread and wine and where the places mainly frequented by locals still exist. Grupo Gente Nova, or GGN, is an association or community where the residents can go to have a drink, hang out, watch football, play cards or domino, pool and, occasionally, some board games. It's not reserved for associates or residents but it's not easy to spot.
Me and a group of friends are currently helping to maintain this place as it depends on volunteers like us; they insist in calling me "Presidente"! I am, but... No need.
I like the informal and genuine ambiance; a mix of the young drinking beer and shots, watching football and warming up for a party elsewhere and the elder ones, drinking small glasses of red wine while playing domino or cards. Don't be confused... this is no tourist spot but a genuine locals' spot.
You can also have some cheap snacks such as soup for € 1, "bifanas" for € 1.80 or "chouriço assado" (see picture!) for € 3.50.
