Valmor Prize Buildings Lisbon

Architecture lovers!

"Lisbon has some wonderful buildings designed by Fausto Queirós Guedes (1837-1898) - Viscount of Valmor. I'm sure you won't miss them :)"

Fausto Queirós Guedes (1837-1898) Viscount of Valmor, was a member of the progressive party and also protector of the arts. A generous noble that left a donation in his will to the town hall, that later became the Valmor Prize. This is one of the most prestigious national awards for architecture and distinguishes reputable works and projects, in notable buildings. Here's some for you to check:

Palácio Lima Mayer: From architect Nicola Bigaglia in revivalism style, received the Valmor Prize in 1902. Located at the corner of Salitre Str. with Liberdade Avenue, home of the Spanish consulate.

Diário de Notícias Building: designed by Pardal Monteiro, received the Valmor Prize in 1940. Located in Liberdade Avenue 266, has a sober facade in modernism style with an iconic tower.

For modern architecture lovers, check the "Amoreiras Towers" from architect Tomás Taveira, located near the Amoreiras Wall. In 1993, these skyscrapers changed the traditional landscape of Lisbon for ever.

From all the buildings I know, I found this one at Alexandre Herculano Str. 25, by famous architect Ventura Terra (won 4 Valmor Prizes). The facade in Parisian style is considered to be one of the prettiest of Lisbon, the building was awarded with the Valmor Prize in 1911 and was home of the Baron of Quartin, an important businessman.

Unfortunately, some buildings have been demolished while others are closed to the public. However, there are still plenty to admire. Since they are spread all over the center in some corners of Lisbon...  I'm sure you won't miss them :)
