A few years ago I moved into the vicinity of Žale - this is what we call the main cemetery of Ljubljana - and started to enjoy long and quiet walks through, yes, you've guessed it, the cemetery. Next to the cemetery is a nice Šmartinski park, but the walks through Žale offered a lot of shade and many interesting pieces of art. I have realized that Žale truly is an outdoor gallery full of interesting stories.
The most spectacular is the first part, called The Garden of all Saints, designed by our most famous architect Plečnik. It has a monumental entry, an oratory and 14 little mortuaries and chapels, each of which presents typical architecture from one past time and/or location. And that is only the beginning.
You can reach it by walking/cycling 3 km from the center, by city bus or on your walk on The Path of Remembrance and Comradeship.
