It feels funny to highlight something as ubiquitous as public transport but in Los Angeles, the most car-centric city in the world, this is far from a popular spot. The small percentage of Angelenos that ride the Metro Red Line do get treated to subway stations filled with art, or at least decorated to highlight the history and culture of each location, effectively capturing the essence of the area (although the project is not limited to the Red Line, this is where it is at its best).
In most modern cities you may find a few subway stations painted as a reminder of a different time or with some artwork to adorn the otherwise grey walls. But, in my experience, no major city has taken up this opportunity and ran with it the way Los Angeles has. All the way across town, you will find both above ground and underground, modern artwork showcasing the neighborhoods and landmarks. It’s one of those things that we can easily take for granted, but I have learned to appreciate the effort the city has put in to breathe life into these stations.
