I’m going to let you in on a secret: you can get a great lunch and a dessert too for about a fiver, right in the heart of Luxembourg. And if you feel like it, you can enjoy it in one of the city’s two main squares, since you buy both ‘courses’ in a passageway that connects them.
Café Veneziano faces the Place d’Armes, and in the summer, there’s a long line out front as people queue up for their delicious Italian ice cream. But walk on through, and you’ll discover pizzas the size of a bicycle tire, which you can buy by the slice for about 3 Euros. Take your pick from several varieties, and they’ll heat it right up for you and serve it on a cardboard wedge with a napkin. Perfect for carrying across the Place Guilliame to the impressive stairs running the length of the Luxembourg City mayor’s office. That’s my favourite place to perch, in front of city hall, watching people eating, drinking or just criss-crossing the square.
Depending on your schedule and appetite, you can follow that immediately with the second course – a double scoop of Veneziano’s gelato – or you can walk around a while before heading back for the sweet end of this fun meal.
Veneziano’s also has great mix-and-match pasta and sauces, focaccia, panini, pizza baguettes and even salads, as well as fancy sundaes – but sometimes you just can’t beat the basics – gimme a slice and a cone any day!
