Akarma was one of my first approaches to vegan food in Mexico City. I actually discovered them one day I was walking around La Juárez with my best friend, Pete. It used to be a very small place. It's just a bar with three seats looking inside the—also very small—kitchen. Now, in addition to those three seats facing the kitchen, Akarma expanded into what used to be a vintage store next door and now offers one 6-seat table and a bar with 4 more seats.
Akarma offers a variety of street food: hotdogs, burgers, pizza, french fries, etc and everything is delicious. All of the bread they use is whole grain and their cheese is homemade. Their pizza is extraordinary. The crust is crunchy and their cheese is buttery and rich. However, the most distinguishable dish at Akarma is their pumpkin flower hot-wings. Yes, pumpkin flower hot-wings. While most vegan restaurants offer cauliflower or tofu hot-wings (which, don't get me wrong, can taste very good) Akarma's hot-wings are flowers covered in 7 different types of flours (none of them are wheat though, so they're gluten friendly) and are accompanied with a delicious homemade barbecue sauce.
The staff at Akarma is always friendly and attentive. Please be sure to order a serving of hot-wings and an "agua del día" or a kombucha.
