I must admit that pulque is an acquired taste. The slimy texture and its bitterness is not for everyone, but once it grows into you, I'm sure it will become one of your favorite Mexican drinks. I have learned over the years from friends who are not from Mexico City that my beloved city is famous for having mediocre pulque. However, when I visited Pulquería Paseo de Sta. Anita with a friend who is a self-proclaimed pulque connoisseur, she admitted that it was the best pulque she had tried in Mexico City.
And how could it not? Pulquería Sta. Anita is one of the oldest pulcatas in Coyoacan (and I am pretty sure in Mexico City). Although it is located a few meters aways from Cineteca Nacional, Pulquería Los paseos de Sta. Anita is never too crowded. Their curados (flavored pulque) are delicious and they always offer different fruit flavors that are in season.
My personal favorite is their curado de guayaba (guava) or fresa (strawberry). My ideal weekend plan is having a matiné at Cineteca and before or after having a curado at Pulquería los paseos de Sta. Anita.
