Latvians love flowers. The tradition of giving flowers in Latvia is very strong. And it is not only on Valentine's day, Women's day on the 8th March or on a date. Actually I am quite sure that women in Latvia buy more flowers than men. Birthday, name day, job anniversary, graduation, weddings, Mothers day, yes and for sad occasions too, we always give each other flowers. Tons of flowers are brought to schools on 1 September. And actually you do not need to have a special occasion to give somebody flowers, so do not forget - if you have some Latvian friends and they invite you to their home, flowers will always be appreciated. And if it's their birthday, name day or other special occasion, then flowers is almost a must!
Sakta flower market has been here for ages, ever since I can remember. About 4 years ago it was renovated. Here is my, and many office workers', favorite place in the centre of Riga to buy flowers. It's cheaper than regular flower shops (but more expensive than the central market) and has a much bigger range of flowers. Years ago I didn't like to buy and receive cut flowers, but now I think I've become more feminine. But anyway there are also some potted flowers.
Sometimes I just like to stop to look at and smell all these beauties and immediately a helpful flower seller comes to ask - "how can I help?" "No, no, thank you, I am just treating the eyes."
