Though considered one of the lesser-known Beatles albums, the sandwich shop of the same name is by far one of the more well-known and iconic in San Francisco. Decked out with the original submarine illustrations, undoubtedly drawn by someone equally enthusiastic about classic rock and sandwiches, the store certainly does stand out. For that reason, curiosity is a more than valid reason to stop by; it's why I did so for the first time. The food definitely lives up to the allure. If the album was considered a step below the others (though I personally disagree), the sandwiches more than make up for it. Each is its own experience with a generous array of toppings, including their homemade hot sauce.
Regardless of your opinions on the album--or on the Beatles in general--the Yellow Submarine is an iconic stop. It's right along the N Judah line, which makes it an ideal stop on the way to the beach, Golden Gate Park, or even as a destination itself.
The Inner Sunset district itself is a great place to check out, with everything from upscale restaurants to magic shops to secret bookstores.
