For years, my favourite thing to do on Sunday mornings was to walk through Chinatown into North Beach for focaccia and coffee. Even though I live across town now, I can't resist focaccia for breakfast...or a snack.
The focaccia at Liguria Bakery brings a touch of Italy to San Francisco. It's located on the corner just across from Washington Square Park. The place feels so familiar for locals. Everyone has a story about the first time they tried it.
The bakery was founded in 1911 by the Soracco Brothers. Today, it is still owned and staffed by multiple generations of the family. It started as a full service bakery. In 1984 the decision was made to sell only focaccia.
The family loves the hometown sports teams! During baseball season, there's orange and black in the windows for the Giants. Year round the autographed photos from past football players for the SF 49ers are on display.
Get there early. Once everything sells out, the bakery closes for the day. Saturdays are the busiest but even weekdays can see lines out the door.
Grab a cup of coffee up the street at Caffe Roma and enjoy watching groups practicing tai chi or locals enjoying the park.
