Mekitsa & Kafe (Мекица и Кафе - Mekitsa and Coffee) is a cozy little place for a fast snack. Mekitsa is a traditional Bulgarian breakfast - deep fried dough balls made of flour, eggs, baker's yeast, and yogurt.
Traditional mekitsa is usually served with powdered sugar or white cheese, but its modern version offers you a wide variety of tastes: jams, chocolate and nuts, ice cream, caramel and fruits, ham, and even peanut butter or avocado. My favorite flavor (typical for Bulgaria as well) is honey and walnuts - a simple but super delicious combination you cannot go wrong with. And for those of you who like to eat healthy food - there are mekitsas with wholemeal flour with no added eggs and milk.
Here is my recommendation for getting the most out of this mekitsa experience: choose one mekitsa with a preferred flour and flavor, get boza for a drink, and order a small portion of buhti. These last ones are the smaller version of mekitsa and definitely should not be missed!
Then go upstairs to the second floor and keep your fingers crossed that the long table near the window is free. Sit there, enjoy your Bulgarian breakfast, and watch the cityscape of Sofia (or enjoy the trams passing).
