The zoo of Sofia is not just large, but it is also the oldest and still the largest on the Balkan peninsula. It was established in 1888 in the center of Sofia, but was relocated to its current location in 1982. Even though it is one of 100 tourist attractions in Bulgaria it is rarely visited by foreigners actually.
The Sofia zoo is not just a zoo - you could literally spend the whole day with your kids, as there are not just animals but other attractions for the kids, including small eateries, where you can relax with a cold beer and some quick bites and continue your tour around. There are many animals to see and if you try to quickly walk around the zoo it will take you a good 1-2 hours.
I really enjoy going there with my kid as he likes the place quite a lot - it looks like a park with alleys and by walking around you actually get to discover the animals and interesting facts about them. Like I said there are nice attractions for kids grouped in a few zones, as well as various stands for ice cream, candy floss, steamed corn, etc. The whole environment is very relaxing and feels really nice, even if there are a lot of people visiting at the same time - you just don't notice the other people as the place is so large.

"Slanchogled" is probably the oldest craft and art supplies store I know and still one of the best in Sofia. Going there is a favourite ritual of mine...

The meatballs are usually served with cabbage salad, lyutenitsa dip & fries. As a Bulgarian, I find kyufte to be a comforting dish that never disappoints.
