On the left Limmat bank, directly above Schipfe, you will find Lindenhof. This place of relaxation in the middle of the city cannot be reached directly by car but only on foot via the winding alleyways of the old town.
It was originally formed by glacial debris and is located approx. 25 m above the river level and offers a wonderful view of the Niederdorf opposite, the Grossmünster and the entire right bank of the Limmat.
It was probably already inhabited over 3000 years ago. A tombstone from Roman times was found here, on which the name of the city of Zurich (Turicum) was first mentioned in writing. Much later a fort was located here, then it became a festival and meeting place with many lime trees. The fountain is a reminder of how the women of Zurich disguised themselves as soldiers during a critical battle, when most of the men had fallen, and stood armed on the Lindenhof to deter the attackers.
Today, this historic site is a place of rest and tranquillity with a very special atmosphere. There are many benches from which you can enjoy the wonderful view, and chess boards and children's playgrounds invite you to linger.
