Wiedikon is full of surprises, and one of its most charming treasures can be found in a red house on Gertrudstrasse 54. Behind its windows, a very different Zurich comes to life. Not one of bankers or hipsters, but of felt mice who reign over a miniature city. Typical scenes and landmarks like the Kunsthaus are lovingly recreated.
The story behind it is as heartwarming as the display itself. An elderly couple has been creating this world together since 2005 for the neighbourhood. He builds the scenery, she designs and crafts the costumes. Together, they bring each whiskered citizen to life with astonishing attention to detail. Every figure has its own character (including fashion statements!), its own story, its own place in this tiny world.
It’s the kind of spot where children have sparkling eyes, adults suddenly feel like kids again, and locals smile at every familiar corner. The better you know Zurich, the more little secrets you’ll notice.
The scene changes every year, usually in autumn, so there’s a new mouse-sized Zurich waiting to be discovered.
If you would like to glimpse behind the scenes, I recommend reading this article in German.
