I happened to run into one of the artists who has organised this exhibition. He was lamenting that, apart from some galleries, there is no place anymore where contemporary art is displayed since the Stedelijk Museum has closed for renovation. So he and his team decided to make just such an expo and “Beeld Hal Werk” is the result.
“Beeld Hal Werk” can have different meanings but, when pronounced, it sounds like the Dutch word for sculpture, some 60 of which are on display within meters of each other. The only connection according to the organisers is the fact they take up place and indeed the variation is immense.
The tower in the middle provides for a nice overview and also is a good location for watching my favourite by far: Zoro’s spinning cloth disc; making a very industrial sound and just a hypnotizing image with the travelling and standing waves.
The location is a former industrial factory where the light changes frequently during the day giving different views to the works. Also the lake view is a nice contrast with all the metal and concrete, especially with a beer or two that you can get from the bar.
Closure is planned for the end of October so go while it lasts.
