Wedding is a good place for beer. There are the neighbourhood breweries Eschenbräu and Vagabund, and many bars like WG or F-Bar offer a wide selection of speciality and craft beers. When I want to buy beer for a quiet evening at home however, I go to the one place that offers all the beers: Hopfen & Malz.
Hopfen & Malz (hops & malt) is a small and friendly speciality shop in the Sprengelkiez, where owner Ludger Berges offers one of the best selections of Berlin craft beer and international brews. This is no fancy place with concept interior and sleek shelf representation that you might find elsewhere in Berlin, in Hopfen & Malz it’s all about great beer and nothing else.
They have a wide range of German beers, primarily focussing on beer from small family breweries in Bavaria and Franconia; plus ales, IPAs, stouts and Trappist and lambic beers from the British Isles, the US and Belgium. Hopfen and Malz also have the largest selection of UK and Irish cider in Berlin; and, last but not least, you can buy beer from every single Berlin craft brewery here – if they bottle their beer, that is.
It’s a great place for a chat about beer as well, and if you’re lucky you might be invited to test a new batch that has just arrived. And just to make sure: there are no big beer brands in green bottles here.
