If you’ve read my other articles, you might have noticed I love Indonesian food. Being half Indonesian myself, I’m always very critical. But I can confirm I recently added an amazing spot to my favorites list. Paon Bali (which means ‘Balinese kitchen’) is a spot that came to me by accident, really. But I’m very, very happy that it did.
Paon Bali is located on KNSM-island in the northeast part of Amsterdam. This island is mostly filled with apartment buildings and if you don’t live here, you probably won’t ever visit it. But this small Balinese restaurant is the reason you should. The owners spend their entire day in the kitchen cooking a set daily meal. This meal consists of at least six different dishes, rice and some homemade sambal. All the dishes are homemade with tons of love. And because you just eat whatever the owners decided for that day, it makes you feel like you are a guest at their Balinese home. For only €12.50, you get an enormous portion with so many different elements that all taste just as amazing. You can have a seat in the restaurant or bring your food to go. I did the latter and it left me sitting on my couch with a fully emptied plate and a huge smile on my face.
Visit their website to check out the menu of the day. You won’t be disappointed.
