Right in the heart of Antwerp's university district, you'll find the beautiful Begijnhof. This place dates back to the 16th century, and it's easy to imagine its rich history as you walk past the old, picturesque buildings.
In both Belgium and the Netherlands, Begijnhofen were communities where unmarried women lived together, supporting each other both financially and socially. While they did not make any monastic vows (like nuns do), faith still played a central role in their lives. Even now, there is a cute little chapel worth a visit.
Today, the Begijnhof in Antwerp doesn't have a Christian function anymore, and all the buildings are inhabited by 'regular' people. Yet, even as a non-religious person, the place feels sacred to me: the minute I step in there, I find myself being calmer and more at peace. It is a perfect place to go alone, enjoy the beautiful flowers in the courtyard and hear the birds sing.
My favourite time to visit is in spring, as there's a beautiful blossom tree blooming around April/May. Still, I think you'll find something magical there, no matter the time you visit.
