Ιf you are a movie lover and you like visiting cinemas when you travel abroad, the perfect place to visit is Astor, one of the oldest cinemas in Athens. It started its screenings in the '20s and after a total makeover reopened in March 2015.
Τhere are two reasons I like Astor: one is that the movies they choose are in digital format but also in 35mm film! If you like indie movies selected from Film Festivals like Berlin Festival, Sundance or SXSW, Astor is the place to be.
The second reason I recommend Astor is its foyer - spacious, warm and very cosy! You can enjoy your coffee in a relaxed environment while reading your book, which you can pick from its bookcase. There are Greek and foreign language books, newspapers and magazines related to cinema, photography, poetry, philosophy and politics to choose from. Apart from the coffee, you can also enjoy other beverages with Greek herbs, while tasting their homemade cakes and marmalade. And if you are in the mood for lunch, do not forget to ask for their bagels. Note that if you have already bought your ticket you have a discount for your coffee or tea!
If Athens were a cinema, it would be Astor!
P.S. Every Wednesday, tickets cost 5.50€ p.p.
P.S.2 Astor accepts both vaccinated and non vaccinated people with immunization certificates or rapid tests 48h.
