A nice dessert is a perfect conclusion to a satisfying meal or an accompaniment to a delicious coffee. But in Koukouvaya, a cafe in the center of Athens, enjoying an excellent dessert becomes an end goal in itself, and the cafe is the destination.
Koukouvaya started its history in Chania in 1997, and since then it has become one of the success stories of Crete and its reputation has spread throughout Greece. When I learned that the legendary Koukouvaya had opened in Athens, I immediately ran to visit it, and the visit did not disappoint. The whole list of unique desserts appeared in front of me and the only problem was what to choose first from the menu.
Undoubtedly the most famous dessert is the Zoumero, a fluffy chocolate cake drizzled with warm chocolate syrup (perfectly accompanied by ice cream). Another special is the Cheesecake, which comes with strawberry jam, blueberry jam, salted caramel, chocolate, or bueno. From then on, any description will do no justice to the taste. I will mention two more: the Igloo in the shape of a sphere (with sponge cake, chocolate cream, and vanilla cream, garnished with caramelized almond crumbs and syrup) and the Pyramid (a frozen combination of caramel mousse, butter cookie, and walnut).
In Koukouvaya, you will accompany your dessert with coffee or different types of tea, and if the weather allows it, you can sit at one of the outdoor tables and observe the movement in the busy square of Agia Irini.

Although Kalos Aeras is located on a busy road, there is no noise penetrating the leafy veranda, and stepping into the house is like time-traveling back to the 60s.

Located on the top of Lycabettus hill, the highest spot of the city right in the center of Athens, it is a steep walk to reach Prasini Tenta, but just the view itself is worth the hike.

"O Lefteris" in Athens makes souvlaki the way our fathers & grandfathers like them best: no gyros, no tzatziki, no fries; just meat, pita, tomato & onion.
