Without a doubt, Maria Callas is the most well-known and, in the eyes of many, the greatest soprano of all time. Over time, Callas evolved from an opera singer to a timeless symbol of beauty, style, and feminine empowerment. She played an important role in opera's transformation into a more widely popular form of entertainment.
Although she was born in Athens and received her first musical training there, the city had no place honoring the diva and her legacy. The Municipality of Athens' creation of this museum is undoubtedly a significant cultural event, establishing a worldwide attraction in the city.
The Maria Callas Museum is, in itself, a truly unique experience. Her voice fills the room as the museum tour opens with three chambers that depict scenes from three of her most well-known performances. Then, there is a chamber honouring Callas as a teacher. On the next floor are costumes and personal items that represent her life and work in chronological order.
The visitor is invited to open drawers, read, listen, and browse in an interactive space that engages all of their senses. In general, the museum introduces visitors to Callas' universe through an open dialogue rather than an academic exhibition.
The ground floor's elegant cafe "La Divina" and the museum's store is where the amazing journey comes to an unforgettable ending.
