Just in the center of Athens there is a little patisserie called Stani which means sheepfold. This place has been operating since 1931 and it offers products based on milk like yoghurt, cream and rice pudding. The reason why I recommend it is the cream pie with syrup or galaktompoureko as we call it in Greece. So tasty you will never forget it.
Stani is located on a small pedestrian road close to Omonia square. You can sit inside or (better) outside where the cute tables wait for you. It’s like an oasis in this grey area of the city. Here you will find Athenians from all generations but especially pensioners, which is part of the charm here. The store is small and the waiters are dressed in the traditional combo of black trousers and white shirt which is the standard uniform in old-school Greek eateries. The recipe of success here is their fresh milk, pure ingredients and a family who loves to bake sweets. If you come here you will notice that the buzz is for the outstanding house yogurt, which is made with sheep’s milk and served in a traditional Greek way, on a plate with honey and walnuts.
Before I leave you to fantasize about this delicious heaven, Ι should underline that Stani has awards of excellence from the 1953 Thessaloniki International Fair. Something that you will confirm when you visit it.
