Every morning, life in Athens' neighbourhoods begins with the smell of freshly baked bread filling the air. A bakery is a favourite place of the city's residents, and bread is an integral part of their eating habits.
Takis Bakery (also known as Artopiotis o Takis), just a few hundred metres from the Acropolis, is an Athenian institution worth discovering. It is a bakery that has maintained a family tradition of producing quality bread since 1961. Every day, the residents of the neighbourhood of Koukaki and Athenians from every corner of the city come here and often wait in line to buy its excellent and always fresh products.
And really, what to choose first? Takis Bakery produces every day thirty different types of bread, sandwiches, biscuits, pies, and sweets, in addition to the always fresh koulouri. Takis Bakery is credited with popularising koulouri as a beloved morning snack in Athens. Koulouri is a delicious small circular bread made with flour and yeast and sprinkled with sesame seeds, which originated in Thessaloniki.
But above all, Takis Bakery is a guardian of the tradition of the Athenian bakery, which also dares to innovate by trying new things, new techniques, and new products. Every visit to this bakery is a different experience, as there is always something new to try. And regardless of its popularity, Takis Bakery always remains a welcoming and familiar place.
