The first thing I noticed about Recasens was that it was always full; the best sign of a good restaurant. After walking past several times I decided it was time to eat there.
Recasens is a local institution in Poblenou. It’s set in a very handsome art nouveau building on the corner of the Rambla and specialises in charcuterie and cheeses. As you step into what must have been an old delicatessen, you are engulfed by a heady mix of cheese and ham aromas. I could stay there all day. Once your turn is up, a member of staff is on hand to take you down the rabbit warren inside to your table. Speaking of staff, service is generally good but I've had times when they take ages to serve you, so be warned...
The décor is eclectic and very appealing, just right for exploring their delicious selection of cheese and cold meats and excellent wines. You can also opt for one of their set platters or boards which start at around 20€. Local artists are encouraged to show their art on the walls, and if you like it, buy it.
One of the specialities is giant torrades or toasted farmhouse bread topped with delicious ingredients. When I go, I like to ask the waiter for some suggestions; the menu is varied and it’s good to get a helping hand.
The place does fill up so book ahead or turn up early.
