Finding good, affordable sushi in Berlin is no easy task, and finding it in Mitte - the upscale neighborhood home to some of the city's priciest shops and restaurants - is nearly impossible. The exception to this rule is the popular Ishin, located on Mittelstraße.
Consistently busy during lunchtime, Ishin offers high-quality sushi and classic Japanese dishes at reasonable prices. Behind the open kitchen, you can watch as skilled chefs prepare endless nigiris and sushi rolls with the patience of Zen monks. These can then be ordered either by the piece or in sets that start as low as 9.50€, including complimentary green tea. No wonder Ishin is a hit!
Apart from sushi, on the menu you can also find donburis, salads, soups, and my personal favorite, Cey-Ro: a bed of rice gently cooked in a bamboo steamer and topped with omelette, various vegetables, pickles, and your choice of salmon, eel or kimchi.
Given its popularity, the restaurant can be quite loud, and it’s certainly not the coziest spot in Berlin. However, the food more than makes up for it. On weekdays between 12:30 and 14:30, expect a queue as office workers from nearby buildings flock in for lunch. Don’t be discouraged, though — the restaurant is quite big, so you won’t have to wait long until a table or a spot at the counter becomes available.
