Strolling through the neighbourhoods of the old West Berlin, you will find just as many bars worth visiting as in the East – albeit them possibly being a little more hidden and spread out. Galander Bar on Stuttgarter Platz in Charlottenburg is one of those hidden gems. A long time ago this place was known as Mon Cheri, a brothel well known for its raucous parties. This chapter has long been closed, however, and is only referenced by a large mural in the main room of a lady in 20s style clothing, carrying a martini glass.
Today’s guests can either find a seat at the bar, or in one of the comfy seating arrangements that line the room. Dark wood paneling, high ceilings, leather armchairs and a huge chandelier give off an art nouveau vibe reminiscent of the Golden Twenties.
Air purists rejoice: The bar was converted to a non-smoking bar in 2020.
