Did you know that Emmental cheese was invented just a couple of miles away from Bern? Chocolate in its modern, delicately melting form was even invented here in the city itself (by mistake, funny story). You might have come across the Berner Rösti (shallow fried potatoes) as well or the carnivores' delight of a proper Berner Platte.
In my humble opinion, eating might be the best way to experience foreign cultures. And tools to cook the new reciepes back home might be the best souvenirs possible.
There are a couple of good addresses for kitchen stuff in the city. But by far, the most charming one is Küchenladen, which is in the lower, old town. The entrance from the main alley is kind of hidden. But once you make it into the shop, you won’t leave without a proper knife for your cheese, a pan for your fondue, a raffle for your birchermüesli, a squeezer for your vermicelles…
