I found this place on a whim. One night, a few weeks back, my boyfriend and I were debating where to get dinner. “Let’s go to Porter Square,” he said, “we haven’t been there in a while.”
So, we looked up some places in Porter Square. He knew of one, but then I saw something on the map that said The Abbey. It claimed to have craft beer and a food menu. What the heck, we thought, let’s try it.
The Abbey, it turns out, is something like a slightly upscale traditional Irish or English pub. Cozy and intimate, the interior is small but with plenty of seating. There is a long bar down one wall and a selection of little tables along the other. We took a seat at the back, looked at the menu, and pretty soon knew what we wanted.
They had our favorite craft IPAs on tap, so that choice was easy. And we both ordered the roast chicken. Let me tell you, this was some of the most delicious roast chicken I have ever tasted. Seriously. The chicken was cooked to perfection but the real pleasure came from the jus on the plate. It was rich in this unbelievable complex sweet and savory flavor. I will never forget it.
So yeah, if you’re looking for a night out in Cambridge featuring upscale comfort food, the Abbey in Porter Square gets my vote.
