In Chicago, we are fortunate to have a plethora of great restaurants with top-quality food. While it is uncommon that I am disappointed in a meal, it is also unusual that I am blown away by one – the food at Gorée Cuisine is an exception.
The lowkey, cafe-like atmosphere creates a warm welcome upon arrival into the small, family-owned and run establishment. Start with a freshly steeped cup of sweet mint tea, a staple of any Senegalese meal. Then, go with the fataya appetizer, triangular fried pastries with a savory filling. For your entree, there are a variety of protein options, such as red snapper, shrimp, chicken, lamb, or salmon, which are all served in a savory sauce with a side of rice.
However, the standout dish is the Maafe: a creamy, savory peanut stew that is accompanied by a side of white rice. As a huge fan of anything peanut butter, maafe is absolutely incredible. But don’t take my word for it, try it yourself! There is a vegetarian option as well.
Don’t forget the delicious thiakry (sweet pudding) for dessert.
