One big trend in Lisbon is the surge of restaurants that mix the traditional with a modern and contemporary twist. Taberna Moderna (or Modern Tavern) is a great example. It feels and looks very informal and cozy, but modern and trendy at the same time.
Dinner starts at the (fantastic) gin bar that they have. Here you are invited to try one of the many gin-variants they have, perfectly prepared by a knowledgeable bartender.
The food is all about sharing, just like in a traditional "taberna". Most offers are traditional Portuguese, some with a modern touch. We shared 2 starters and 2 main dishes with 4 and were very satisfied. We topped it of with 3 great desserts.
We dined on a Wednesday, so it was no problem getting a table. If you want to dine on the weekend, it is advisable to make a reservation.
The restaurant is located near Alfama, just next to the historic "Casa dos Bicos" at Campo de Cebola.
