Located near the Church of San Sepolcro, the Ambrosiana is one of Europe’s oldest and most prestigious libraries. Founded by Cardinal Federico Borromeo and opened to the public in 1609, it was one of the first public libraries in the world.
Among its collections is Leonardo da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus, a vital assembly of drawings and writings. Pages of this extraordinary manuscript are displayed in special transparent cases, offering a rare glimpse into his genius. For me, the highlight is Raphael’s Cartoon for the School of Athens. This preparatory masterpiece reveals the meticulous effort behind creating timeless art—the detailed studies of faces, light, and composition.
I first revisited the Pinacoteca during a guided tour that ended with a Milanese aperitivo in the library’s courtyard, marking a moment of post-COVID renewal. This experience reminded me why the Ambrosiana is so special—a blend of history, art, and inspiration.
If you seek a quieter yet profound cultural experience in Milan, the Biblioteca Ambrosiana is worth every moment. Don’t you think?
