The Schauburg children’s theatre is a cultural hive that presents contemporary shows in a wonderfully fun, playful and entertaining way. I recently enjoyed their spectacular, award-winning production, Gute Wut (Good Anger).
This show takes a volatile topic – anger – and transforms it into something visually stunning and even therapeutic. This is a minimalist, no words show that achieves more emotional resonance than many verbose productions.
The visual storytelling is powerful, using a simple black box space with minimal design and props that are aesthetically pleasing. The four actors play different roles with great physical skill, creating a narrative easy for children aged 4-7 to grasp.
I like that the show manages to be completely amusing and entertaining without ever feeling pedantic, tedious or even overtly pedagogical. It offers a simple but clear message with essential coping strategies for tantrums and dealing with difficult emotions.
But the real magic is the unexpected relief it offers to parents. Watching those typical home scenes like meltdowns being played out before them on stage is incredibly funny. It’s a moment of shared community where you realize, "it’s not just me and there are ways to deal with it". It makes you think about anger constructively. My four-year-old loved it, and I loved the experience of watching it with them.
This fantastic show continues to play this and next year, so there’s plenty of time to catch it. If you go, take advantage of the local feel, including the small café outside with snacks, drinks and cakes to enjoy before or after a performance.
